999 drama at King of The Road contest

A SICKENING injury halted this year’s King of The Road contest when Dr John Gledhill was hit in the teeth while wicket-keeping.

Blood poured out of team Aussie John’s mouth after the ball ricoched into his mouth as he tried to gather a throw from the deep.

Players immediately called an ambulance and medics attended to him on the Wandsworth Common pitch.

John – who lost a tooth and suffered a cut lip – was then taken to St George’s Hospital in nearby Tooting.

The incident happened in the gloom as the final play-off between Kevin Pittaway and Giles Fagan was being played.

Kev had knocked out both Daniel Sherman and James Pritchard on the final ball then edged defending champ Leon Watson in the semi final.

Club chairman Giles beat David Hughes, Shailesh and Richard Peralta on his route to the final.

It left the final undecided and a new King of The Road has yet to be named. No details have been released yet as to how the final will be completed.
